CAD technician

Job Description

The CAD Technician will be responsible for performing complex assignments including the development of conceptual layouts, schematic design, design development, construction document drawings, permit-level drawings, bid and construction-level drawings, sketches, maps, and graphic representations of engineering designs using AutoCAD Civil 3D. This position emphasizes design and plan set preparation of a variety of primarily site/civil projects, including, municipal utility projects such as sanitary collection and trunk mainlines, water transmission and distribution, municipal broadband, roadway construction, site design and grading, and layout of easement and property boundary information. Work activities include but are not limited to site and utility grading, pipe networks, utility alignments, plan and profile drawings, sections, detail drawings, and as-built drafting for conceptual, preliminary, and final design drawings. The CAD Technician will be able to utilize client information, relevant design requirements, details, and standards to apply to a variety of municipal clients.

Supervision Received: Works under the general supervision of the Senior Civil Engineer or other senior management when assigned.
Supervision Exercised: No supervision of subordinates.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty proficiently. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Other duties may be assigned. Duties are varied in nature, and include:

  • Provide Civil Engineering drafting and design services by preparing and maintaining AutoCAD Civil 3D engineering drawings that compile to create a set of permittable plans.
  • Prepare designs from general instructions and preliminary sketches, diagrams, or schematics.
  • Prepare working drawings from conceptual plans to schematic drawings, design development drawings, final engineering drawings, and construction record drawings.
  • Prepare plans, specifications, and estimates for a wide variety of civil engineering projects that include the following elements: geometric design, utility plan and profile, subsurface utility engineering (SUE) plans, utility detail drawings, site grading design, cut and fill analysis, horizontal and vertical alignment, intersection layout and sight distance determination, interchange layout, roadway drainage, and right-of-way plans, among other design elements.
  • Produce roadway sections, erosion control plans, site preparation plans, roadway profiles, drainage plans and profiles, utility plans, paving, pavement marking plans, and signing plans.
  • Thorough understanding of design of roads and streets, drainage, and utility design.
  • Assist with the development, implementation, and maintenance of CAD standards.
  • Prepare for and attend project progress meetings (design and construction) to successfully progress the project design and construction process and objective.

The successful candidate will work collaboratively with their teammates and assigned supervisor to help achieve their respective project objectives.


Minimum Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications:

  • High school diploma required.
  • Certification or secondary education diploma preferred.
  • 5 years of experience in the design of site/civil, utilities, and roadway projects preferred.
  • Proficient experience using AutoCAD Civil 3D to create surfaces, alignments, and profiles.
  • Willingness to assist with a wide range of projects and work with multiple project managers.
  • Work effectively on design teams and coordinate with team members including CAD technicians/designers, engineers, managers, administrative staff, and construction staff.
  • High attention to detail, good organizational and time management skills.
  • Good written and oral communication abilities and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability and desire to work in a team environment and communicate effectively with coworkers, managers, and clients.
  • Ability to ask for additional direction and assistance when needed.

Education: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a related discipline, or technical school with an emphasis on computer-aided drafting and design.

Experience:
Minimum 5 years of increasingly responsible experience in AutoCAD Civil 3D with an emphasis on civil development.


Language Skills
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common interoffice procedures. Ability to communicate with clients and the public. Ability to effectively communicate with engineering and construction management staff to interpret plans, design details, and design notes, in resolving design-related issues.

Mathematical Skills
Ability to apply mathematical concepts necessary to perform geometric design, horizontal and vertical alignment, line and grade, slopes, and other calculations, as necessary.

Reasoning Ability
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

Travel Requirements
Travel for this position is limited to conferences and training that the company may support.

Wage: $30-$45 per hour depending on experience
